ONANCOCK MUSEUM IS OPEN!
"The Samuel Outlaw Blacksmith Shop in Onancock is open to the public.
In 1927, Samuel Outlaw graduated from a blacksmith apprentice program, moved to Onancock and built a blacksmith shop on Boundary St. For the next 64 years Outlaw served the needs of Eastern Shore farmers, watermen and others. Outlaw retired in 1991 at the ripe old age of 95.
Outlaw’s former shop has remained in the family and now is being readied to re-open as one of the last surviving in tact blacksmith shops in Virginia. A local group is finishing up the process of repairing the building and gathering Outlaw’s tools and plan to make the shop a memorial museum.
Gerald Boyd who heads up the restoration said, in a talk at the Onancock Rotary Club on Tuesday, that the museum will be open for the Garden Tour on April 27 and will begin regular hours later in the summer or early fall.
